Sedation Dentistry: Will I Remember Anything?

Sedation dentistry is an excellent tool to help those who suffer from dental anxiety. With sedation, you can have dental work completed in comfort without having to undergo general anesthesia. Sedation is safe, simple, and helps you face even complicated dental procedures anxiety-free.

How is Sedation Different from General Anesthesia?

One common misconception about sedation dentistry is that you will be completely unconscious, or that you will not remember anything that happened during your dental visit. Sedation allows you to be completely conscious and aware while remaining relaxed and tension-free throughout your dental procedure. Sedation is also much safer than general anesthesia.

For your dental treatment, you’ll be given a local anesthetic to numb the area to be worked on as well as sedation to help you relax and be comfortable. Time seems to move more quickly, and many patients have described the sensation as a dream-like state. You will be able to answer questions and do as you are instructed by the dentist.

How Does Sedation Dentistry Work?

Sedation is accomplished in one of three ways:

  • A sedative pill administered before the procedure begins
  • Nitrous oxide administered during the procedure
  • Intravenous sedation administered during the procedure

The type of sedation is based on your preference and that of your dentist, who might take into consideration the length and complexity of the procedure when deciding on the most effective method. If you are to take a pill beforehand, you will need to have someone drive you to and from your appointment, as it will affect your ability to drive. Nitrous oxide, on the other hand, tends to wear off more quickly, but consult with your dentist to see if you need someone to accompany you.
