Break These Bad Brushing Habits

Break These Bad Brushing Habits

Are you brushing your teeth incorrectly? Many people are surprised to learn that common brushing traits are not the best way to clean your teeth and gums. When we brush correctly, we remove debris and bacteria. We also lower our risks for common diseases by controlling plaque and tartar with proper oral hygiene. In fact, proper brushing and flossing could save your teeth from needing fillings. Our dental clinic is committed to helping our patients learn more about their oral health. Information is power. Following are some common bad habits that we should all avoid.

Rushing

Do you rush through your oral hygiene routine? Perhaps you only spend about 30-45 seconds brushing. Did you know that you should be brushing your teeth for about two minutes each time you brush? It takes roughly two minutes to properly clean each tooth, the tongue, roof of the mouth, and gums. We recommend making sure that you adjust your schedule so that you have ample time to brush and floss. Keeping an eye on the time is important if you find yourself prone to rushing.

Using an Old Toothbrush

Is your toothbrush so old that you don’t know how old it is? A toothbrush (or an electronic brush’s brush heads) should be replaced every three or four months. One easy trick to remembering when to replace your toothbrush is to throw out your brush at the beginning of every season.

Brushing with a Heavy Hand

Sometimes scrubbing harder helps us clean our counters and floors but the same is not true for our teeth. Brushing too hard or vigorously could lead to wearing down tooth enamel and irritating sensitive gum tissue. It’s best to brush with gentle strokes. Teeth should be brushed softly in circular and back-and-forth motions.

Using a Damp Toothbrush

Have you ever noticed that your toothbrush stays damp between uses? This is not a good thing. A wet toothbrush can harbor bacteria. Be sure to store your toothbrush upright in open air between uses so that its bristles can properly dry.
