How to Keep Your Teeth Shining Bright This Summer

While it may seem that there are many things out of our control during this unprecedented time, one thing remains in your control — your dental health. The key to looking and feeling your best this summer is by keeping your smile healthy and bright. Use these tips to improve your at-home dental hygiene routine even during the dog days of summer.

5 Ways to Maintain a Healthy and Bright Smile While Staying at Home

1. Eat Teeth-Friendly Foods

Sticking to a well-balanced diet can not only help support your immune system but ensures that your teeth and gums will receive all of the nutrients they need. Eating foods rich in omega-3 fats (such as certain fish) can reduce your risk of gum disease.

As you spend time at home this summer, try to add these foods to your at-home menu:

  • Cheese is a great source of protein and calcium, eating cheese as a snack can help protect you from tooth decay.
  • Yogurt is perfect for the overall health of your teeth. The probiotics found in yogurt fight off harmful bacteria that can become trapped in the mouth and cause cavities.
  • Leafy greens are a great addition to any diet, as they are full of vitamins and minerals that are good for your whole body. Green vegetables (such as spinach and kale) contain folic acid — which can help to treat gum disease.
  • Apples, celery, and carrots are full of fiber and water and help to produce saliva in your mouth, which rinses away bacteria and food particles. Crunch fruits and vegetables also act as a natural floss and assist in stimulating your gums.

Foods That Can Cause Dental Damage

While the above-mentioned foods are great for your teeth — some snacks can actually cause damage to your smile. These foods include:

  • Citrus fruits
  • Candy
  • Starches such as chips
  • Dark-colored fruits such as blueberries, blackberries, and pomegranate.

Protect your smile by limiting these foods as much as possible! Also, sugar is the most prominent danger to your smile. Eating foods with high levels of sugar can lead to the overall decay of your teeth. Be sure to eat these foods in moderation, followed by rinsing your mouth out with water after eating.

2. Avoid Sugary Drinks

Similarly to the food we eat, the beverages we choose have a serious impact on our oral hygiene. The increased acidity in your mouth due to these drinks can lead to tooth decay. Also, certain soft drinks can discolor your teeth. To avoid damaging your teeth, only consume the following beverages in small amounts:

  • Soda and fruit juices
  • Coffee and tea
  • Sugary drinks
  • Red wine

3. Use the Right Dental Tools

We always recommend that our patients choose dental products that have the American Dental Association (ADA) seal of approval. Choose a soft-bristled, electric toothbrush over a manual one and consider purchasing a WaterPik to make cleaning your mouth and gums easier.

4. Keep Up with Daily Care

With so much happening in the world right now, it may seem difficult to keep up with your typical routine. However — don't sway away from your regular brushings 2-to-3 times a day. Additionally, make sure to regularly floss — and always remember your tongue, too! Your tongue can play host to a variety of bacteria. A proper daily dental health regiment will help make your smile stay strong, and can help give your confidence a boost.

5. See Your Dentist Regularly

You should see your dentist every six months for a hygiene check, cleaning, and a check-up. Additionally, visiting the dentist routinely can help prevent severe dental concerns.
