How Do Cavities Form?

Dental decay can happen to anyone who has teeth. From babies to senior citizens, everyone needs a dental maintenance program to keep gums and teeth healthy. Children should have their first visit to a pediatric dentist around the age of twelve months.

This first visit has many advantages. A preliminary dental exam will allow the pediatric dentist to spot any problems that may be occurring. This can include monitoring the eruption of teeth; this first appointment is a perfect opportunity to learn the best way to care for your child’s teeth to help prevent cavities from forming.

Babies and toddlers require assistance from their caregivers to keep their teeth clean. A soft cloth can be used to wipe teeth for baby … a small dab of an age appropriate toothpaste on a soft bristle brush can be used for your toddler.

As your toddler grows, they can assume the daily task of brushing. However, this requires supervision for many years to make sure they are caring for their teeth correctly and often. Example makes a great teacher so allow your children to watch and learn from you each day as you complete your daily oral health regimen.

Dental decay forms when oral bacteria penetrate the dental enamel. As the decay advances, the nerve is impacted which is often the first indicator for the patient there is a problem.

There is now a preventative treatment for patients that have not experienced dental decay. A dental sealant is a material that is painted on the surfaces of cavity-free teeth. The sealant will fill in the uneven pits on the surface of teeth blocking bacteria from penetrating.

Sealants are placed on the chewing surfaces, and have proven to prevent cavities from forming. They are not permanent and can be worn away. Your dental provider will monitor when it is necessary to replace sealants.

Fluoride is an important aid for decay prevention. Although our drinking water contains this important element, drinking bottled water and alternative products has limited the amount of fluoride needed for good oral health in many patients. Fluoride treatments are available from your dental provider in addition to toothpaste and mouth rinses.

Daily brushing and flossing are critical to prevent dental decay; twice yearly dental visits for a thorough cleaning and dental exam will help keep minor problems from escalating into major repair.
